Improving internal fire safety
As part of our commitment to safety, we’re improving all our multi-storey blocks in the city, including Kirkgate House. As a part of this, we've asked our fire safety contractor to review critical areas of the building including; common areas of the building, such as the lift lobbies, corridors, drying areas, and within service risers.
They have surveyed and recommended repairs or improvements to improve the fire safety rating for:
- flat entrance doors
- internal doors
- internal layout of the flats (distances, escape routes etc)
- fire separation of the flats and common parts (walls, ceilings, services etc)
- alterations that may compromise fire compartmentation
- current fire detection arrangements
- fire suppression systems
The planned upgrades would:
- significantly reduce the risk of a fire spreading in the building
- maintain the fire resistance ratings for doors and walls
- seal all service penetrations with certified fire-stopping
- help make sure that the current stay put advice remains effective
- fully protect the evacuation routes for residents and firefighters
Information for owners
We've already been in touch with owners to provide more detail on the proposed upgrades and the costs and to ask them to vote on whether to go ahead with the proposed upgrades. The TMS process has concluded for the fire improvement works, and the majority of owners have voted in favour of the work for it to go ahead.
