City Plan 2040

Engagement

A jigsaw of various pieces aligned together to form a completed jigsaw puzzle. Each piece features a different icon representing city sights.

The City Plan 2040 Development Plan Scheme includes a participation statement which shows how we are planning to engage with people and when they can get involved in the City Plan 2040 process.

Here you will find details of any current engagement activities and what is coming up so you know when and how you can be involved.

Evidence Report

To help produce the Evidence Report, we engaged with a wide range of stakeholders and interested parties to make sure we covered all the relevant issues.

We also consulted with the general public through the ‘what makes a good place?’ engagement and children and young people through their own ‘place and play’ questionnaire. These results have informed the Place Profiles and helped us to understand how different places in Edinburgh are working.

You can see the results of the engagement in the Engagement Report and in the Place Profiles. The feedback from those consultations will continue to be used as we prepare the Proposed Plan.

Call for Ideas

We have launched the ‘Call for Ideas’ and this will run until the end of September 2026.  This is an opportunity for you to help us shape the vision, priorities and early proposals for the Proposed Plan.

Who can take part?

Everyone – residents including young people, community councils, local groups, businesses, social enterprises, landowners, developers as well as public and third sector partners.

Is your idea related to planning?

Your idea should focus on the use and development of land and buildings across Edinburgh. This could be:

  • Showing us a site where you think development could happen

  • Telling us what you think should be built on a site

  • Pointing out buildings, spaces or sites you think should be kept or protected

  • Telling us what facilities or services you think are missing from your area or what could be improved

  • Suggesting new planning policy to stop or encourage certain planning uses
