Dundee Street and Fountainbridge

Overview of proposals to improve walking, wheeling and cycling

We are developing proposals to improve walking, wheeling and cycling along Dundee Street and Fountainbridge.

The changes will create safer, more attractive streets for everyone. They also support our ambition to provide more options for sustainable travel across the city as part of our *City Mobility Plan

Our plans involve moving on from the temporary infrastructure that is currently in place. This will help us to

  • build better pavements and crossings
  • upgrade and extend existing temporary cycleways with a high quality cycle route
  • provide better places to spend time with more seating and greenery.

The benefits include

  • improved access for more people to and from shops and schools within the area
  • a more pleasant environment, less traffic dominated and more inviting for people to spend time in
  • more options for travelling into the area from across Edinburgh.

The high-quality cycling route and  street improvements will provide an alternative to the shared Union Canal path, which is often busy with people walking, wheeling and cycling.

We will also provide a connection between the Telfer Subway and the Union Canal via Gibson Terrace, improving connections to the surrounding network from Roseburn, the Canal, the Meadows and beyond.

The proposals support our ambitious Fountainbridge Regeneration Masterplan which is seeing former industrial land converted to a high-quality, low carbon, mixed use development, creating a thriving and flourishing sustainable neighbourhood.

*The City Mobility Plan 2021-2030 replaced Edinburgh’s Local Transport Strategy 2014-2019. It sets out how we can work towards creating an Edinburgh that is connected through a safer and more inclusive carbon neutral transport system - delivering a healthier, thriving, fairer and compact capital city and a higher quality of life for all residents.
